Dermal Fillers

Dermal Filler (Juvederm TM)

Dermal Fillers come in many compositions.  Most frequently, they are made of crosslinked hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the skin.  They come in different densities and thus, are very versatile.  They are used to replace volume lost by the aging process.  Replacing volume helps correct the conditions that initially cause the majority of wrinkles.  Fillers can also be used to enhance certain features, including lips and cheeks.  Lastly, they can be used to fill in superficial wrinkles that occur over time with repetitive muscle movements.

The most common areas treated by fillers are the cheeks, nasolabial folds (running from the nose to the mouth), and the lips.  However, most areas of the face can be treated, but it takes a skilled injector to know which type of filler and what depth is needed for adequate correction.

Common side effects are most often from the trauma of injection.  These include bruising, swelling, and pain.  Sometimes, lumps and bumps of filler can occur that most commonly dissipate with massaging of the affected area.  Sometimes, these lumps need to be “squeezed out” through a small poke of a needle, or dissolved with a medicine called hyaluronidase, termed “reversing” the filler.  This substance only works for hyaluronic acid based fillers.

Uncommon, serious side effects are most often a result of injecting the filler into an artery, which can cause occlusion or “clogging”, which results in necrosis and eventual scarring of the corresponding skin.  This, too, could and should be treated with hyaluronidase.  This side effect can happen to some of the most skilled injectors; nevertheless, your chances can be drastically diminished by seeing an experienced, safe injector.  Rare cases of blindness have been reported from unsafe injection of the nose and glabella.  These areas should be treated carefully, with blunt cannulas being employed that are highly unlikely to pierce an artery.

Other uncommon but manageable side effects can occur including infection, biofilm formation, and rejection by your skin can occur.  The most important part of getting this treatment performed is finding a skilled professional that takes the time to properly educate you about expectations, side effects, and what to expect from treatment.  When used correctly, it is a wonderful treatment that can restore you back to your youthful self.
